Welcome to my page
Ing. Marco Pugliese, Ph.D.
In the picture me on top of the Eagle Tower of Caernarfon Castle (Wales) in 2008.
I was born in Roma on February 26th, 1966.
In 1992 I went on to specialise in microelectronics at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (Waterville, NH, USA) and in solid state electronics at the IIASS Istituto Internazionale per gli Alti Studi Scientifici (Vietri sul Mare, SA, Italy) and in 1997 in communication networks (San Jose, CA, USA).
From 1990 to 1995 I have collaborated with the Electronic Engineering Department of University of Roma "La Sapienza" and the Institute of Solid State Electronics (now Institute for Photonic and Nanotechnologies) of CNR (the Italian National Research Council) on the design and development of microdevices for satellite communications.
Since 1994 I am working on communication networks and electronic security with leading industries and service operators. I have been involved in standardisation activities in ESA, ETSI and IETF. Now I hold a management position in the corporate security sector.
From 2006 to 2019 I has been a research affiliate of the Center of Excellence DEWS (Design methodologies of Embedded controllers, Wireless interconnect and Systems-on-chip) - University of L'Aquila: in 2007 I started up WINSOME Project (WIreless sensor Network Secure system fOr structural integrity Monitoring and alErting), a "research incubator" with a twofold objective: 1) develop running prototypes of the cryptographic scheme TAKS (Topology Authenticated Key Scheme) and of the intrusion detection algorithm WIDS (Weak process model based Intrusion Detection System) introduced in my doctoral thesis [24] and 2) enable students to gain skills for the participation in projects concerning cybersecurity applied to ad hoc networks: effectively about 13 M.S. and 2 Ph.D. students joined WINSOME at DEWS and research results have been reported in 12 conference papers [ref. 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35] one journal paper [ref. 37], one book chapter [ref. 30]. In 2016 WINSOME Project achieved its objectives as DEWS has been engaged in the three-year SEAMLESS Project (SEcure plAtform for Multi-hop wireLess sEnSor networkS, 2016-2019) co-funded by the italian MoD (Ministry of Defence). SEAMLESS led to the experimental validation of TAKS and the early start up of ECC-based (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) TAKS release (ECTAKS).
Since 2020 I am a research associate of the Center of Excellence EX-EMERGE (Connected, Geo-localized and Cyber-secure Vehicles) - University of L'Aquila where I am leading the Cybersecurity Working Group in EMERGE Project (Light Commercial Vehicles with Emerging Technologies for "every-day" and "emergency aid" Operations, 2020-2024) co-funded by the italian Ministry of Economic Development: here ECTAKS is the core of the Crypto Engine, the security component of EMERGE system. I am also involved in SHINE-ON Project (Secured HIgh accuracy localizatioN Equipment for autOmotive applicatioNs, 2022-2024) funded by the national Cyber 4.0 Competence Center: here the Crypto Engine is the security component of the ECU SGAM (Secure GNSS Augmentation Module) which will be tested for compliance with the ISO/SAE DIS 21434 "Automotive Cybersecurity Engineering" according to the UN Regulation No. 155.
Since 1995 I am IEEE member and in 2021 I was elevated to IEEE Senior member (SMIEEE).
I am certified UNI 10459:2017 "Senior Security Manager" extended to D.M. n. 115/2014.
Since 2017 I am in A.I.PRO.S. (Associazione Italiana PROfessionisti della Sicurezza) as Head of Department "Security of Vehicular Systems and Terrestrial Transports". Since June 30th, 2022 I joined the Board of Directors.
From 1995 to 2000 I has been lecturer on "Telematics" and on "Telecommunications" at the Military School for Transmissions of the italian Defence Staff (Stato Maggiore della Difesa).
Since 2016 I am lecturer on "Wireless Sensor and Vehicular Networks Security" at the University of L'Aquila.
Since 2021 I am lecturer on "Security Management applied to Safety" for the Course of Qualification in Security Management at the Fondazione ICSA.
Since 2006 I am serving as reviewer of scientific papers submitted to journals and conferences in the field of embedded systems security from publishers as Oxford University Press, Elsevier, Wiley.
My scientific interests are security applied to resource constrained devices, information-theoretic security, discrete event dynamical systems theory and estimation theory applied to intrusion detection, elliptic curve cryptography.
